Australia Leads AI Companion Searches as Interest Falls Across Most Markets

Australians generated the highest rate of online searches for AI girlfriend chatbots among more than 20 countries examined, even as reported loneliness rates remained relatively low, according to a September analysis by adult-entertainment platform Babestation.

Australia recorded 70.1 AI-girlfriend-related searches per 100,000 internet users, ahead of Sweden at 63.8 and Canada at 63.7, Babestation said. Ireland and the Netherlands rounded out the top five, with 62.7 and 58.1 searches per 100,000 internet users, respectively.

The findings challenge the assumption that demand for AI romantic companions is primarily driven by loneliness. Babestation compared search trends in English and local languages with YouGov loneliness survey results and demographic data. In Australia, 10% of respondents were reported to feel lonely; Sweden and the Netherlands each recorded 8%, while Canada registered 15%.

The company said the countries with the highest search activity generally shared high income levels and broad access to digital services, factors it identified as possible contributors to adoption and curiosity around AI companions.

Search interest declined year over year in every country reviewed except Spain, according to the analysis. Canada’s search activity was down 25% from 2025, while Ireland’s fell 40%. Australia declined 11%, Sweden 19% and the Netherlands 13%.

Babestation also said searches were not limited to men. Women represented a comparatively large portion of people seeking AI romantic partners in Japan, the United States and Spain, the company said, adding that women accounted for about 30% of such searches in Japan.

The research measured AI-girlfriend searches relative to internet-user populations and included queries for both girlfriend and boyfriend-style chatbots. The underlying figures are based on online-search data and survey comparisons, rather than a measurement of chatbot usage or subscriptions.
