Detox Service Availability Varies Widely Across U.S., Analysis Finds

Fewer than one in five U.S. addiction treatment facilities listed in federal data report offering detoxification services, highlighting uneven access to a critical early stage of substance-use treatment.

Treatment Locators said its national analysis of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration facility data reviewed 11,513 treatment locations. Of those, 2,261 facilities, or 19.6%, reported providing detoxification services.

The analysis found usable geographic coordinates for 2,169 of the detoxification facilities, allowing the organization to assess how service availability differs by location. Treatment Locators said the findings showed substantial geographic variation in access to detox services across the country.

Detoxification is often an entry point to treatment for people with substance-use disorders, particularly when withdrawal symptoms require medical monitoring. The analysis focuses on facilities’ reported service offerings in SAMHSA data and does not establish capacity, wait times, treatment quality or whether a facility is accepting new patients.
