Preply Cites Higher Motivation and Faster Progress for One-to-One Language Tutoring

Language learners who moved from self-guided apps to one-to-one tutoring reported higher motivation and faster progress, according to research cited by online tutoring platform Preply.

Preply said 90% of surveyed learners felt more motivated after making the switch, while 99% said they progressed faster. The share of respondents who said they were meeting their language goals “very well” or “completely” more than doubled, the company said. Details on the research methodology were not provided.

The company positions live tutoring as an alternative to primarily app-based language instruction, arguing that tutors can tailor lessons, provide conversation practice and add cultural context around a learner’s goals.

Preply says its platform connects learners with more than 150,000 tutors offering instruction in over 90 languages. It combines human-led lessons with AI-enabled tools.

The company is also offering limited trial access to tutors for potential first-hand editorial reviews, as it seeks to highlight differences between self-guided learning products and live instruction.
