Are Language Learning Apps Enough? New Research Shows Apps Get You Started, Tutors Get You Fluent!
Preply Says One-to-One Tutoring Boosts Motivation After Language Apps
Language learners who move from self-guided apps to individual tutoring report stronger motivation and faster progress, according to findings cited by online tutoring platform Preply.
Preply said 90% of surveyed learners felt more motivated after making the switch, while 99% said they believed they were progressing more quickly. The share of respondents who said they achieved their language goals “very well” or “completely” more than doubled, the company said.
The findings highlight a business opportunity for tutoring platforms as language-learning apps remain a common entry point for beginners but may not provide the personalized feedback and live conversation practice sought by learners pursuing fluency.
Preply connects students with online tutors and said it has surpassed 150,000 tutors worldwide, up from 100,000. The company described the research as independent, though details on the study’s methodology, sample size and timing were not provided.
